Ethan Nguyen, Week 14 - Time and Memory
Beans.
You may be wondering: what do beans have anything to do with this? Well, beans have historically been a staple food throughout many cultures around the world. It is its continuous usage throughout history that allows it to be the iconic food it is. Other than that unrelated fact, it was just to get your attention to the main idea of this blog.
The topic I am alluding to is history.
See, history is just a collection of the many memories that have been recorded by various peoples of the past. In a way, it represent the collective experiences of the past generations of civilizations and express the ups and downs of the average human’s life. It also reflects the values and beliefs of the different cultures and societies that have existed throughout history. History allows for a better understanding of humankind and society’s evolution.
Like a traumatic memory, tragic past events act as a reminder of what went wrong in humanity, demonstrate what can go wrong, and potentially lead to a way to address the problem. Take the Holocaust, the unfortunate event taking millions of innocent lives. The affected nations made changes to remember the event and to prevent an event like this to ever occur again.
However, wins for humanity in the past also remind everyone like a proud moment in an individual’s life of the potential for a positive change or progress. These events serve to show people the possibilities for their future life. Events like the civil rights movement or the progress in other various aspects of life demonstrate what is possible through the actions of a collective group.

ReplyDeleteHi Ethan,
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed the start of your blog since your hook captured my attention. Beans are some of my favorite foods and their relationship with history is definitely an interesting concept. Your emphasis on their use to draw in my attention made me more curious to keep reading and discover the main idea you discussed.
I agree with your perspective on history. I feel through the memories of others in the past, we can evolve and move forward as society, learning from the mistakes of the past to prevent them from occurring again. Tragedies such as the Holocaust must be prevented from ever happening again which can be accomplished through the memory of history and the immense damage the event had on the world. However, I feel these memories also draw us closer as a society through common ancestry and passions those before us in history shared. From the movements you discussed in your blog, I feel humans are much stronger when united for a powerful cause which, as a society, we should work more towards.
Hi Ethan, I loved how you started your blog with a single word bean. You also briefly explain the significance of beans on culture and food. I was also suppressed when you mentioned the main focus of the blog is related to history. History is sort of a memory for human life, which as you said as been record by multiple people. It helps us understand our past and reflect on the mistakes. History also allows us to not make the same mistakes and it allows us to understand what was wrong in “humanity.” I loved the example of Holocaust you used which shows the importance of learning history, so these sort of event repeat. You also show some positive impacts of history and how it serves to display the potential for mankind. Overall, your blog was well written and had a unique topic. Reading this made me understand the importance of learning history.
ReplyDeleteHi Ethan, I like how you opened your blog; it was a very unique way of intriguing the audience and luring them to read the rest of your blog. History is very vital to human life, and these memories from the past help us remember the negative and positive things that have happened to our society. The bad events in history help us prevent these memories from repeating, and teach us valuable lessons about the world; what to and not to do. The good events in history help us be proud of being human and teach us to be hopeful and brave. History teaches a lot of things, and by keeping track of these memories, we can help make this world a better place. Displaying the bad and good impacts of history helps show the importance of memory, and I think your blog would be very insightful to a larger audience.
ReplyDeleteHey Ethan,
ReplyDeleteI really like how you opened your blog today. The single word “Beans.” really intrigued me, and I like how you were able to connect something so insignificant like beans to history. I particularly liked your opening because pinto beans are one of my favorite foods. I agree with your views on history. Through the experiences and memories of others from our past, we are able to evolve our society. I appreciate how you share the impact of both good and bad moments of history on humanity. Traumatic memories like the Holocaust prompt us to remember the pain we caused and make sure to prevent it from ever happening again while good memories like the women’s right moment make sure we continue to develop on them. Thank you for writing this blog!
