Sanika Week 11: The Power of Social Media
The Power of Social Media
Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, Twitter, Youtube, Pinterest, LinkedIn, WhatsApp, Quora, Snapchat, and the list goes on.
These and more are all examples of social media that have revolutionized communication worldwide. To put it simply, social media has changed our lives. With the click of a button, vast amounts of information and opinions can be rapidly shared, people can be influenced, and individuals can connect with each other from across the world. The power that social media and its users hold is boundless.
One of the main, and arguably most important, uses of social media is its ability to share information universally straight away. News reports and global events gain attention as they are circulated by more and more people posting, hearing, and sharing about them. In fact, according to the “latest data from Pew Research…around 71% of people now get at least some of their news input from social media platforms” (SocialMediaToday). This is a greater percentage than from 2018 when it was 68% (SocialMediaToday). This is especially understandable as in 2020, Covid-19 hit which caused mass amounts of news to be spread through social media.
Additionally, social media was and is still being utilized to inform and educate people about significant movements and events like the Black Lives Matter movement and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
This proves, again, the power social media holds and also how crucial it is for the news-related information shared on social media to be correct. If most people utilize social media as their news source, social media platforms should ensure that the knowledge being spread is accurate. By guaranteeing that accurate information is being published, we can make sure that the power of social media is used for the greater good.
Hi Sanika, social media has a significant impact on us and holds an immense amount of power over every individual. It helps us get a lot of new information and gives us easy access to learn what going on in the world. I like how you gave statistical information on how many people use social media to learn something. Social media has been very helpful for social movements as you mentioned, and currently helping with the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Social media can be biased. It is hard to know which information is accurate as once I remember reading about something that was not true and believing it was a real event. Social media has many cons but also many pros. Everyone should be careful while using social media and only use it for “the greater good.”
ReplyDeleteHello Sanika! I completely agree with your view, social media has enabled a fast way for us to receive news about society's current events. Without social media, we would have to rely on verbal messages, telegraphs, newspapers, etc., which don't compare to the quickness of the click of a button that social media provides for us. Your utilization of statistics furthers your point of social media's effectiveness. Social media keeps us socially aware of what is going on, especially for teens, who need this knowledge to prepare for their adulthood. Although it is a great platform to keep us informed, it is also easy for people to become misinformed about certain issues. Thus, others need to be mindful of the sources they are reading from.
