Jiya Week 15: Why is my memory not working
Picture from google
Recently while memorizing my notes for AP Biology I realized I forgot all the information I learned in about one minute, but when I was listening to a new Taylor Swift song the lyrics just stayed ingrained in my brain unintentionally.
Why?
When you're memorizing notes for AP Biology, factors such as distraction, lack of rehearsal, and the complexity of the material can also affect the memory. Sometimes when we have no motivation to learn a subject, it also tends to cause us to not be able to memorize any information. And memorizing anything related to studies is not fun, which is what causes our brain to get distracted. We can use better reading techniques that could help us memorize certain topics or we can start writing down everything, which is also an efficient way of helping details stay in our memory.
Listening to a new song, several factors may contribute to the lyrics becoming ingrained in your brain unintentionally. Firstly, music often engages multiple sensory modalities, which can enhance encoding and retention. The rhythm, melody, and emotional content of the song may capture your attention and facilitate memory formation.
Additionally, the repetitive nature of music, including the structure of the song and the repetition of lyrics in the chorus or verses, can aid in encoding through rehearsal. This repetition helps reinforce the neural connections associated with the lyrics, making them more likely to be stored in our brains. Some other factors that affect our memory are lack of sleep, stress, vitamin deficiencies, etc. Improving a few of these things will help our memory.
Overall, the differences in how information is processed and the factors influencing memory formation explain the difficulty in retaining biology notes versus the unintentional ingraining of song lyrics.
Why Can't I Memorize Easily? (Explained!) | Iris Reading
Hi Jiya! First off, I like how you referenced Taylor Swift in your first sentence. She is a well-known figure in our society, so by bringing her up, you hook the audience with someone they are familiar with. I relate to your difficulty with memorizing notes, but easily being able to memorize song lyrics. Often, we tend to remember things we like rather than things we are uninterested with. Your reasoning behind this process was very informal and taught me a lot about memory. I like how you provided studying techniques to help improve our memory. Overall, your blog was very organized and beneficial to read.
ReplyDeleteHello, Jiya. While I do not have AP Biology, I can relate to the feeling of forgetting “all the information I learned in about one minute” while I can remember the song lyrics of a song I have just listened to. It is a sometimes frustrating experience that you manage to explain. I also noticed that the blog is structured with a logical order that aided its appeal. It is nice that you offer a potential solution by stating that there is “an efficient way of helping details stay in our memory.” However, it is not really elaborated on, although it is seemingly not the main topic. Overall, the blog was a nice read due to its organized structure and appealing tone.
ReplyDeleteHey Jiya,
ReplyDeleteI was instantly able to relate to your blog as you talked about your struggles memorizing AP Biology facts. You are right that retaining information takes motivation, something that I often find is lacking when it comes to school. It is so much easier to remember things that we are interested in or even find the slightest bit interesting. I probably have a 100 more songs memorized than AP Calculus formulas right now and my AP test is literally in two weeks. There are also lots of things that I pick up unintentionally; I'll often remember a random fact I learned on the radio as I drove to school and be able to use it in a conversation much later. I've always wondered how this happens. Overall, your blog was interesting and taught me about why my memory works the way it does. Thank you for writing this blog!
Hi Jiya! I really like how you introduced your blog with a concise personal story that some of the audience, like myself, can probably relate to. Afterwards, you asked the question, “Why?” which I think was a great way to allow the audience to ponder why this occurs, and it also conveys what your blog is going to be talking about. Additionally, I like how you structured your blog with one paragraph only being the question, “Why?”, and the rest being readable-sized paragraphs with information stated in a logical order. By expanding on various factors that affect memory and solutions to help our memory, I think you provided the audience with a good explanation to answer the question asked at the beginning of your blog. Overall, I enjoyed reading your blog and thank you for sharing!
